Some of the best family conversations don't happen when we officially decide it's time to “talk.” They happen in the car.
There's something about sitting side-by-side instead of face-to-face that can make people talk differently.
A child might suddenly tell you what happened at school. A teenager might mention something you've been wondering about for three weeks. A spouse may bring up a funny memory. A grandparent may start telling a story you've never heard before.
And sometimes everyone just laughs about something completely ridiculous.
The next time you're driving together, try leaving the first few minutes without filling the silence. Ask one question: “What's something you've been thinking about lately?”
Then listen. You don't have to turn every answer into advice. Sometimes being interested is enough.
